An Invitation

The piano is not a skill. It is a companion for life.

I have been teaching piano for more than twenty years, and in that time I have learned one thing above all others. Students do not quit the piano because they lack talent. They quit because their lessons stop meaning anything to them. Pages of exercises with no music at the end of them. Corrections without context. A technique pursued in the abstract, never tied to the pieces they actually want to play.

My approach is different. You bring me the music you want to play - a nocturne by Chopin, a prelude of Rachmaninoff, a film score, a pop ballad, a piece you heard once in a concert hall when you were twelve and have never forgotten. We build your technique in service of that music. Scales, chords, theory, phrasing - all taught as the language that makes those pieces possible.

What I ask of you is patience, curiosity, and a willingness to sit at the piano for fifteen minutes a day. What I promise in return is an education in music that will stay with you long after our final lesson.

The Programme

What you will learn at the piano.

A complete musical education, structured around the pieces you choose to play.

01

Piano Technique

Posture. Hand position. Finger independence. Dynamics and phrasing. The mechanical foundation that separates players who sound stiff from players who sound musical - taught slowly, carefully, without ever losing sight of the music itself.

02

Repertoire You Love

From chart pop and film themes to Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven. Your repertoire is built around music that actually motivates you to return to the piano - because technique pursued for its own sake is technique soon abandoned.

03

Reading Music With Fluency

Sight-read with confidence so a new piece of sheet music is an opportunity, not an obstacle. Pattern recognition, intervals, rhythm, inner voices - the skills that turn paper into sound without struggle.

04

Theory, Chords, Scales

Music theory taught as it was meant to be - as the language that makes sense of every piece you play. Chords, scales, modes, voicing, harmonic analysis - all woven into living music rather than isolated on a page.

The Craft Preserved

Every lesson recorded. Every lesson followed by summary notes.

A traditional piano lesson ends when the teacher closes the lid. An hour of corrections, phrasing cues, fingering discoveries - and by Wednesday, half of it is forgotten. That is why progress stalls. Not want of talent. Want of memory.

My lessons are different. Every Zoom lesson is recorded in full and sent afterwards with written summary notes - what we worked on, what to practise, which bars of which piece, which exercises and in what order.

  • Full recording of every lesson Return to the exact moment a phrase was demonstrated, a chord voicing explained, a passage corrected.
  • Written summary notes, every week Precise practice instructions in plain English. Parents know exactly what their child is working on.
  • Your own personal library Yours to keep. A resource you will still be drawing on years from now - and after lessons conclude.

The Teacher

Twenty years of turning beginners into confident pianists.

Master of Music Bachelor of Music 20+ Years Teaching AMEB Prep

William Coyle holds a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music, and has spent more than two decades teaching pianists at every stage - the five-year-old beginner, the teenager chasing AMEB grades, the adult returner, the professional picking up after years away.

His teaching draws from the classical tradition but refuses its worst habit: treating technique as a chore rather than a means. Every scale has a purpose. Every exercise has a piece behind it. Every student leaves each lesson with a clearer sound than when they arrived.

The Pupil

From a first piano lesson to a lifetime of playing.

The principles of good piano teaching do not change with age - only the pace and the repertoire.

Ages 5 – 12

Young Beginners

Patient, encouraging lessons for children aged five to twelve. Musical literacy built through pieces they genuinely want to play. Parents receive full summary notes after every lesson so practice at home is guided, not guessed.

Ages 13 – 18

Teens & Exam Students

Whether preparing for AMEB piano grades, building a portfolio for conservatory entry, or simply playing for love of it - structured progression that meets the student where they are rather than where a syllabus demands.

Adults

Returners & Beginners

Beginning at forty. Returning after twenty years away. Picking up again after the children have left home. Adult students receive fast-tracked technique and the pieces they have always wished they could play.

Common Questions

Everything you might be wondering.

Do I need a piano at home?
Yes - a piano or full-weighted digital piano is required. An acoustic upright or grand is ideal, but an 88-key digital with weighted keys works beautifully for Zoom lessons and many students begin there. A 61-key unweighted keyboard is acceptable for very young beginners but you will want to upgrade within the first year. If you are unsure what you have, send a photograph and I will advise straight away.
How do Zoom piano lessons actually work?
You receive a Zoom link before each lesson. Point your device - laptop, tablet or phone - at your piano so I can see your hands and hear you play. I demonstrate from my own piano. Across twenty years of teaching and thousands of Zoom lessons, the format works remarkably well for piano at every level, from first note to conservatory preparation.
How do I receive the recording and notes?
After each lesson, I send a private link to the full video recording along with written summary notes covering what we worked on and what to practise that week. They typically arrive within a few hours of the lesson ending.
Where in Australia can I be located?
Anywhere. Zoom piano lessons work in every state and territory - metropolitan, regional, or remote - provided you have a reasonable internet connection. Students in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and plenty of smaller towns take lessons with me each week.
How flexible are lesson times?
Very. Lessons run weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Most ongoing students hold the same weekly slot, but times shift around school terms, work rosters, and life events. Tell me your preferred window and I will find a fit.
How long are lessons, and how often?
Thirty-minute lessons are $80 and hour-long lessons are $150. Most students hold a weekly slot - younger children typically take thirty minutes, teens and adults usually opt for the full hour. Fortnightly lessons are available for adults wanting a slower pace.
Do I have to commit to a term?
No. There are no term fees, enrolment fees, or annual contracts. You pay lesson to lesson and can pause or cancel any time - just give reasonable notice so your slot can be offered to someone else.
I haven't played piano in twenty years. Is it too late?
Not even slightly. Adult returners are among the most rewarding students to teach - you already know what good music sounds like, and the muscle memory from years ago returns faster than you would expect. Many adult students are playing favourite pieces again within a term.
Do you prepare students for AMEB piano exams?
Yes. AMEB and ANZCA piano preparation is available for students wanting structured examination milestones. Most students play for enjoyment rather than exams, but the technique foundation is the same either way.
What ages do you teach?
From five through adulthood. Children under five can sometimes start depending on readiness - get in touch and we will discuss.
